Sarracenia ‘Barba’

Sarracenia ‘Barba’ is a trumpet pitcher plant that uses a ‘lobster-trap’ trapping mechanism. The pitchers are lined with nectar-exuding glands that tempt insects to step into the pitcher. They then gradually venture further down inside, where they cannot fly out. They drown in the sticky, enzyme-containing fluid at the bottom and are eventually digested by this carnivorous plant.

Sarracenia is native to the United States and grows in damp, swampy conditions. It’s effortless to grow and is ideal for an unheated greenhouse or cool windowsill. Avoid direct sunlight and ensure that the soil is moist at all times. Use distilled water or rainwater rather than tap water, as this may contain lime and chlorine that will harm the plant.
