Opuntia microdasys cristata is a truly unusual cactus that instantly stands out thanks to its crested, fan-shaped growth. Instead of forming flat pads like the standard bunny ears cactus, this cristate form grows in sculptural, wave-like shapes that look almost coral-like or sculpted by hand. Every plant is unique, making it a real collector’s piece.
Its surface is covered with tiny golden or pale glochids rather than long spines, giving it a soft-looking but textured appearance. Over time, the crest slowly expands, creating an increasingly dramatic form. This cactus loves bright light and plenty of sun, which helps maintain its compact shape and strong colouring.
Water sparingly, allowing the compost to dry out completely between watering, and reduce watering significantly in winter. Use a well-draining cactus compost and handle with care, as the fine glochids can irritate skin.
