Sarracenia psittacina (Parrot Pitcher)
Sarracenia psittacina is one of the American pitcher plants from genus Sarracenia. This particular group of carnivorous plants are native to the eastern US and Canada. The horn-shaped traps of Sarracenia psittacina are located close to the ground and are almost horizontal. Under high light intensity, the traps turn deep red in colour.

Sarracenia psittacina
When an insect walks into the trap of the Sarracenia psittacina, it is tricked into looking for the exit. This is because the traps contain translucent ‘windows’ through which the insects try to crawl out. However, instead of going to the exit, they walk deeper and deeper into the trap. A network of hairs hinders the insects’ movement after which they are eventually consumed by the plant. In nature, if Sarracenia psittacina is flooded for a while due to strong rainfall, it will even catch tadpoles and aquatic insects. The flowers of this Sarracenia are red and have a very distinctive structure.
