Rhipsalis capilliformis, often known as the Hairy Stem Rhipsalis or simply the Mistletoe Cactus, is a wonderfully quirky, cascading plant that looks as if it’s having a permanent good hair day! Its long, slender green stems tumble and twist in every direction, creating a soft, tangled curtain of greenery that looks stunning in a hanging pot or trailing from a high shelf. Native to the rainforests of South America, it’s a jungle cactus – so unlike its desert cousins, it loves a bit of humidity and dappled light rather than hot, direct sun.
This easy-going plant is perfect if you like a wild, relaxed look. It thrives in bright, indirect light and enjoys a gentle misting now and then to mimic its tropical home. Water it when the top of the soil feels dry, keeping things just lightly moist but never soggy. During spring and summer, a tiny splash of cactus or orchid feed every few weeks will keep it lush and happy.
Over time, Rhipsalis capilliformis becomes beautifully full and flowing, making it a living green waterfall that adds texture and life to any room. Occasionally, it even rewards you with clusters of tiny white flowers followed by little berries – a lovely surprise from this carefree, bohemian houseplant that’s as easy to love as it is to grow.
