Carnivorous Plants

As a result, carnivorous plants have had to adapt itself in order to get nutrition in another way: the plant has in fact learned to capture its own nutrition. This is very unique within the plant world, a plant that catches insects.

Carnivorous plants are found nearly everywhere. You can find them in various jungles across the world and continents such as Europe, Africa, Asia, America and Australia.

The carnivorous plants is a large family with many different family members. Across the world, carnivorous plants have evolved differently depending on the living conditions in that area. For each species, the trap and trapping methods differ. Carnivorous plants use flowers to attract insects to be pollinated, and they also attract insects to catch them. The combination of colour, smell and leaf shape of a plant is important to entice the prey into the deadly trap. For people, this is reason in two ways to think of these plants as special home plants: First, the plants look very special with their different types of traps. Second, it is fascinating to see how a plant catches an insect and uses it for food!

Some Carnivorous Plants species do also very well outside in the UK in a bog garden for example. Most used are Sarracenia flava, purpurea, oreophila, Darlingtonia californica, hardy sundews and pinguiculas.

The species we offer in our carnivorous plant webshop are: Drosera (Sundew), Sarracenia (Trumpet Pitcher plant), Darlingtonia californica (Cobra Lily), Dionaea muscipula (Venus fly trap), Utricularia (Bladderwort), Pinguicula (Butterwort), Nepenthes (Monkey Cup), Cephalotus (Albany Pitcher) and Heliamphora.
