Growing and Sowing Carnivorous Plants

Growing Your Own Carnivorous Plants

In this blogpost we’ll provide you with some tips and tricks to make sure your Carnivorous Plant seeds will have most success to grow into nice and healthy plants!

Growing and sowing your own Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap), Sarracenia (North American pitcher plant), or Drosera (sundews) is a rewarding but also challenging job. Droseras will be easy to grow, as they will come up quickly and give nice plants soon. Venus flytrap and Trumpet Pitcher will ask for a bit more patience as they generally take more time to germinate and grow into mature plants.

Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap): Sowing Venus flytrap seeds involves planting them in a container filled with a well-draining mix of sphagnum peat moss and sand. The soil should be kept consistently moist and the container should be placed in a bright, warm location with high humidity. It’s important to provide proper drainage to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged. Germination can take several weeks and the plant can take several years to reach maturity.

Sarracenia (North American pitcher plant): Sowing North American pitcher plant seeds involves planting them in a container filled with a mix of sphagnum peat moss and perlite or sand. The soil should be kept consistently moist and the container should be placed in a bright, cool location with high humidity. Sarracenia seeds require a period of cold stratification to germinate, so they can either be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks or placed outside during the winter months. Germination can take several weeks to several months and the plant can take several years to reach maturity.

Drosera (sundews): Sowing sundew seeds involves planting them in a container filled with a well-draining mix of sphagnum peat moss and sand. The soil should be kept consistently moist and the container should be placed in a bright, warm location with high humidity. Sundews are sensitive to minerals and salts, so it’s important to use only distilled or rainwater to water them.
