Monkey Cups

Monkeys Cups or Tropical Pitcher Plants (Latin name Nepenthes) are found the jungles of South East Asia. They form cups that hang from the end of the leaves, full of digestive liquid. The plants climb and scramble up the trees and over the ground using tendrils for anchorage. There are two main types -the highland varieties from high altitude and more tolerant of lower temperatures and genrally easier to grow, and lowland plants which like it hot and steamy all year round - a little more difficult for the beginner to keep but stunning plants to grow if you have the right conditions. (there are also intermediate plants!).
Nectar attracts all sorts to the traps but once the flies an insects fall over the precipice of the lip there is no climbing back up.
The traps come in many sizes and colours some with striking markings. Some of the modern hydrids are very dramatic plants and quite easy to grow, A north facing conservatory is ideal. They like it bright but not too much full sun, and they like humidity so a hand sprayer is ideal (or a steamy bathroom). Definitely an indoor plant. For full instructions see the care page.
